SUBJECT ; Set of stamps Issued to introduce some cultural activities of the Government, the most significant of which is the building of a New National Library.
Three years before, on December 23rd 1971, President Nguyen Van Thieu inaugurated The New National Library which is located at No. 69
Gialong Street in Saigon, and covers an area of about 20.000 square meters. The cornerstone laying ceremony was carried out by Prime Minister Tran Van Huong on December 28th 1968. and the construction
work was completed on April 1st 1971 with a total cost of more than VN$ 181 million.
The National Library consists of 2 building blocs : one comprises a ground floor and two stories, where are located reading rooms for aldults and children, an exhibition hall and offices for staff; the other
building is at the back having 12 floors, where books and periodical publications are kept In shelves. The Library contains over 200.000 books of all kinds in Vietnamese, English, French and Chinese. Besides
there are 2154 different magazines and 602 different newspapers. Books are kept conformably to the Dewey System. Statistic show that the New National Library received 283,152 readers during 1973.
